A stroke (cerebrovascular accident or CVA) is a loss of brain function. There are two types of strokes: ischemic and hemorrhagic.
In an ischemic stroke, an obstruction (thrombosis, embolism) prevents blood from reaching the brain cells on the other side of the obstruction; thus, it blocks oxygen and may cause tissue damage or death.
A hemorrhagic stroke, which results from a ruptured blood vessel causing blood leakage, produces the same consequences.
